Iowa City, Iowa
began in 1837 with Mesquakie villages. John Gilbert and Wheaton Chase founded
Iowa City’s trading posts. President Martin Van Buren was the territorial
governor of Iowa City in 1838. In 1857, Ansel Briggs became Iowa City’s first
governor. Iowa City’s well-known residents include Laura Leighton and Janet
Guthrie.
